One of the attributes of a good business person is knowing the competition. Harness racing has enormous competition from other forms of gambling, primarily casinos. Although many racetracks are coupled with casinos, the racetracks are subsidized by those who prefer slot machines, black jack tables, crap tables, etc. In order to compete with these other forms of gambling, many within the Harness racing industry monitor the publicly traded casinos. Here is that list:

 

Boyd Gaming Corporation (STOCK SYMBOL: BYD) is a multi-jurisdictional gaming company. The Company operated 24 wholly owned gaming entertainment properties in Nevada, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, as of December 31, 2016. It operates through three segments: Las Vegas Locals, Downtown Las Vegas, and Midwest and South. It owns and operates a travel agency and a captive insurance company that underwrites travel-related insurance, each located in Hawaii. The Company’s Las Vegas Locals segment includes properties, such as Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, The Orleans Hotel and Casino, and Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall. The Downtown Las Vegas segment includes three properties, such as California Hotel and Casino Fremont Hotel and Casino and Main Street Station Casino, Brewery and Hotel Street Station. The Company’s segments include Caesars Entertainment Resort Properties, LLC (CERP), Caesars Growth Partners, LLC (CGP) and Other. The Company’s resorts operate primarily under the Harrah’s, Caesars and Horseshoe brand names. The Company also owns the London clubs international family of casinos. The Company’s facilities include gaming offerings, food and beverage outlets, hotel and convention space, and non-gaming entertainment options. As of July 14, 2017, the Company through its subsidiaries, operates 47 casinos in 13 states and five countries. As of December 31, 2016, CERP owned six casinos in the United States and The LINQ promenade along with leasing Octavius Tower at Caesars Palace Las Vegas (Octavius Tower) to Caesars Entertainment Operating Company (CEOC) and gaming space at The LINQ promenade to CGP.

 

Churchill Downs Incorporated (STOCK SYMBOL: CHDN) is a racing, gaming and online entertainment company. The Company is engaged in brick-and-mortar casino gaming with approximately 9,030 gaming positions in seven states, and is a legal mobile and online platform for betting on horseracing in the United States. It operates through five segments: Racing, Casinos, TwinSpires, Other Investments and Corporate. Racing includes four racetracks: Churchill Downs Racetrack, Arlington International Race Course, Fair Grounds Race Course and Calder Race Course. Casinos is a provider of brick-and-mortar real-money casino gaming. TwinSpires operates mobile and online wagering business, which is a platform for betting on horseracing. Other Investments includes United Tote and Capital View Casino & Resort Joint Venture (Capital View).

Eldorado Resorts, Inc. (STOCK SYMBOL: ERI) is a gaming and hospitality company that owns and operates gaming facilities located in Ohio, Louisiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Company’s segments are Nevada, Louisiana, Eastern and Corporate. As of May 1, 2017, the Company owned and operated approximately 503,000 square feet of casino space with approximately 20,000 slot machines and video lottery terminals (VLTs), over 550 table and poker games, 45 restaurants and 6,500 hotel rooms. The Company manufactures and supplies casino currency, with various security and design options, playing cards, table layouts, gaming furniture, table accessories, dice and roulette wheels. It also provides various radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies, including low- and high-frequency RFID casino currency, RFID solutions for casino currency (consisting of low- and high-frequency RFID casino currency readers, antennas, casino currency authentication software, casino currency inventory software applications and software maintenance services). Its casino operations feature a range of slots, table games, and race and sports book wagering. Nevada Gold & Casinos, Inc. (STOCK SYMBOL: UWN) is a gaming company involved in financing, developing, owning and operating gaming properties and projects. The Company’s segments include Washington, South Dakota, Nevada and Corporate. The Company operated a portfolio of nine mini-casinos in Washington State (Washington), which include restaurants, bars and approximately 126 table games, at April 30, 2016. The Company owned A.G. Trucano, Son and Grandsons, Inc. (South Dakota), a slot machine route operation in Deadwood, South Dakota consisting of over 705 slot machines in 16 locations, at April 30, 2016. It also owns Club Fortune Casino in Henderson, Nevada. Penn National Gaming, Inc. (STOCK SYMBOL: PENN) is an owner and manager of gaming and racing facilities, and video gaming terminal operations with a focus on slot machine entertainment. The Company operates through three segments: Northeast, South/West and Midwest. The Northeast segment consists of various properties, including Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Hollywood Casino Bangor, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course and Hollywood Casino Toledo. The Company has developed and patented an information and management system (called Table Trac system) that automates and monitors the operations of casino table game operations. In addition to its table games management system, the Company has been adding functionality to related casino system modules for guest rewards and loyalty club, marketing analysis, guest service, promotions, administration/management, vault/cage management and audit/accounting tasks. System sales include installation, custom casino system configuration and training. In addition, license and technical support are provided under an annual license and service contract. Products and services forming a part of the Table Trac system include modules designed to drive player tracking programs and kiosk promotions, as well as vault and cage controls.

 

Tropicana Entertainment Inc. (STOCK SYMBOL: TCPA) is an owner and operator of regional casino and entertainment properties located in the United States, and a hotel, timeshare and casino resort located on the island of Aruba. As of December 31, 2016, the Company’s United States properties included two casinos in Nevada and one casino in each of Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and New Jersey. It caters to local and regional guests to provide a fun gaming environment with lodging, dining, retail and entertainment amenities. Its segments include East, Central, West, and South and other. The East segment includes Tropicana Casino and Resort, Atlantic City. The Central segment includes Tropicana Evansville and Lumiere Place Casino. The West segment includes Tropicana Laughlin Hotel and Casino, and MontBleu Casino Resort & Spa. The South segment includes Belle of Baton Rouge, Trop Casino Greenville and Tropicana Aruba Resort & Casino.

 

Wynn Resorts, Limited (STOCK SYMBOL: WYNN) is a developer, owner and operator of destination casino resorts that integrate accommodations and a range of amenities, including dining outlets, retail offerings, entertainment theaters and meeting complexes. The Company’s segments include Macau Operations and Las Vegas Operations. The Company’s Macau Operations include Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace. It also includes Encore, an expansion at Wynn Macau. The Company’s Las Vegas Operations include Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, an expansion at Wynn Las Vegas. Wynn Las Vegas is located at the intersection of the Las Vegas Strip and Sands Avenue. As of December 31, 2016, it occupied approximately 215 acres of land fronting the Las Vegas Strip. As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned approximately 18 acres across Sands Avenue. The Company is constructing Wynn Boston Harbor, an integrated casino resort in Everett, Massachusetts.
