One of the attributes of a good business person is knowing the competition. Harness racing has enormous competition from other forms of gambling, primarily casinos. Although many racetracks are coupled with casinos, the racetracks are subsidized by those who prefer slot machines, black jack tables, crap tables, etc. In order to compete with these other forms of gambling, many within the Harness racing industry monitor the publicly traded casinos. Here is that list:
Boyd Gaming Corporation (STOCK SYMBOL: BYD) is a multi-jurisdictional gaming company. The Company operated 24 wholly owned gaming entertainment properties in Nevada, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, as of December 31, 2016. It operates through three segments: Las Vegas Locals, Downtown Las Vegas, and Midwest and South. It owns and operates a travel agency and a captive insurance company that underwrites travel-related insurance, each located in Hawaii.
